Three tricks, all about defeating prediction. Symmetry — scales built from repeating cells (whole tone, diminished, augmented) have no root pull, so the ear never finds home. The tritone & semitone clusters — the most unstable intervals, used as colour instead of tension to resolve. Wide & equal leaps — melodies that move in fixed jumps (major 3rds, tritones) feel mechanical, not human. Stack any of these over a drone and you're off-world.
Pick a root and hear each climb. The symmetrical ones (top four) are the core alien sound — they literally repeat their shape, so no note feels like the destination.
Tap to strum. None of these have a comfortable home — they hover. Plane them chromatically (same shape, slide it) and tonality dissolves completely.
