Beautiful //Voicings

A palette of lush, open shapes that ring beautifully on the chambered clean tone — add9s, maj7s, suspensions and slash voicings — plus two progressions and the comping ideas that make them sing. Roll to volume 6, a little reverb, and let them bloom.

Progressions · put them to work

Lush Ballad · in D

Dmaj7 | Bm9 | Gmaj7 | A7sus4

I – vi – IV – V, all dressed up. Strum softly in straight 8ths, let each chord ring its full bar. The top strings barely move — that's the glue.

Floating Fusion Loop · in Bm

Bm9 | Em7 | Gmaj7 | Dadd9/F#

A modal loop that never fully lands. Comp with space — one push per bar, then let it sustain into the reverb. This is your liquid-clean comping vehicle.

Comping Ideas · how to make them sing

Pedal-tone comping

Keep the open B and high E ringing and move shapes underneath. Dmaj7, Bm9, Em7 and Asus2 all share those open tones, so they chime straight through the changes — instant Landau/Metheny shimmer with zero effort.

Voice-leading

Move one note at a time. Dmaj7 → Bm9 is almost static (they share D, F#, A, C#) — only the bass shifts. Smooth, connected motion sounds far more sophisticated than jumping between barre chords.

Quartal comping

Barre three adjacent lower strings at one fret (E–A–D are tuned in 4ths) and slide the shape diatonically. Stacked 4ths sound open and modern because the ear can't pin them to major or minor — pure Scofield ambiguity.

Rhythm & space

Beautiful comping is mostly silence. One syncopated push per bar, let it ring, then choke it with the fretting hand. Use the volume swell to fade chords in like a pad. The rests do the work.

Chord-melody

Pick the top note of each voicing as a little melody while the rest supports. Because these shapes share high common tones, a melody line emerges almost on its own as you change chords.
