Renegade Destruction · one move at a time
Six steps. Each adds one thing. Don't skip ahead.
Start slow — 60 bpm, click on every beat. The riff is just a chord stab and a little hammer-on. We'll build to that. If a step feels easy, good — that's the point. Do each one until it's boring, then move on.
Just the low B, palm-muted, in time. Nothing else. Get the muting even.
P.M. (palm mute) throughout
E|--7---7---7---7---| quarter notes: 1 2 3 4 E|-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-| now eighths: 1+2+3+4+
Goal: every hit sounds identical. Same mute, same volume. This is the engine.
Fret this and strike it once. Let it ring. It should sound bright — that's a B major chord.
e|--7-- 1st finger area B|--7-- G|--8-- <- this note is the "big" sound D|--9-- E|--7-- low B, root
Goal: all five strings ring clean, no buzzes. Strike it 10 times until the shape is automatic.
Same chord, now palm-muted, stabbed on each beat. Short and punchy, not ringing.
P.M. throughout
e|--7---7---7---7---| B|--7---7---7---7---| G|--8---8---8---8---| D|--9---9---9---9---| E|--7---7---7---7---| 1 2 3 4
Goal: a tight, percussive "chunk" on each click. Mute it right after each hit.
One string, two notes. Pick the 7, then hammer your finger down onto the 9 without picking again.
G|--7h9-----7h9-----| pick hammer (don't re-pick)
Goal: the hammered 9 rings out clearly on its own. If it's quiet, hammer harder/faster.
This is the riff. Stab the chord, then answer it with the hammer-on. That's the whole idea.
P.M. throughout
e|--7---------------| B|--7---------------| G|--8-------7h9-----| D|--9---------------| E|--7---------------| STAB answer
Goal: chord lands on beat 1, hammer answers on beat 3. Loop it round and round.
Add one ghost note between the stab and the hammer — a quiet, half-muted (9) on the D string. Now it grooves.
P.M. throughout
e|--7---------------| B|--7---------------| G|--8-------7h9-----| D|--9---(9)---------| E|--7---------------| STAB ghost answer
Goal: the (9) is felt more than heard — it keeps the pulse alive between the two main events. That's the Landau feel.
