The Specimen Cabinet

Eight scales from well outside musical normality — Verdi's fever dream, Stravinsky's tritone machine, Scriabin's mystic six, the double harmonics, the Japanese five — all rooted on E, all playable, all of which actually work. Bonkers is easy; bonkers-that-resolves is the discipline. Each specimen ships with the reason it functions.

01Why Bonkers Works At All

Every scale in this cabinet obeys at least one of three laws. Learn the laws and no scale is unusable, however deranged the interval content.

Law 1 — The Anchor

If a scale contains root and 5th (E and B), the ear will accept nearly anything happening between them. Six of the eight specimens keep the B; the two that don't compensate under Law 3.

Law 2 — The Parachute

Any amount of strangeness is forgiven if the phrase ends by half-step onto a chord tone. Most of these scales are riddled with half-steps around E and B — they're not bugs, they're landing gear.

Law 3 — The Drone

A scale with no functional harmony still works over a pedal tone — the drone supplies the gravity the scale refuses to. This is how the whole cabinet gets practised: everything over E.

02The Specimens

All eight, rooted on E. The money note is the pitch that makes each scale sound like itself — feature it or don't bother.

EnigmaticVERDI, 1888 — WRITTEN AS A JOKE, OUTLIVED THE JOKE E F G♯ A♯ C D D♯ F → then the D–D♯–E top ♭2 at the bottom, whole-tone wasteland in the middle, chromatic crawl at the top. Genuinely alien; lands beautifully.
Tritone ScaleSTRAVINSKY / PETRUSHKA LOGIC E F G♯ B♭ B D the F/B♭ pair Two major triads a tritone apart (E + B♭) interleaved. Maximum menace from minimum material.
PrometheusSCRIABIN — THE MYSTIC CHORD, LAID FLAT E F♯ G♯ A♯ C♯ D A♯ Six notes, no 5th, no minor 2nds — pure suspended luminosity. Whole tone with an escape hatch (the C♯).
Double HarmonicHIJAZ KAR / BYZANTINE E F G♯ A B C D♯ F and D♯ — the pincers Half-steps clamped both sides of the root, two augmented 2nds. The most dramatic scale in common circulation anywhere on Earth.
Hungarian MinorLISZT'S FAVOURITE TROUBLE E F♯ G A♯ B C D♯ A♯ Harmonic minor with a ♯4 — one note away from your cell system, and that one note changes the nationality.
PersianTHE DOUBLE HARMONIC'S DARKER SIBLING E F G♯ A B♭ C D♯ B♭ — the flattened anchor Double harmonic with the 5th knocked flat. Violates Law 1 deliberately; survives entirely on Laws 2 and 3.
HirajoshiJAPANESE KOTO TUNING E F♯ G B C C → B Five notes, two half-steps, infinite space. Proof that bonkers can also mean radical subtraction.
InsenHIRAJOSHI'S SHADOW MODE E F A B D F ♭2 and ♭7 in a pentatonic — dark water. The scale Ryuichi Sakamoto could make an entire film score from.

Cabinet Maps

Enigmatic — Single String

The interval story only makes sense laid flat: half-step · aug 2nd · whole-tone plateau · chromatic parachute · low E, frets 0–12

Double Harmonic — Open Position (frets 0–4)

The pincers (F, D♯) in rust either side of the amber roots · aug 2nds live on the E-string 1→4 and B-string 1→4

Tritone Scale — Open Position (frets 0–5)

E major triad tones vs B♭ major triad tones — the scale is just these two chords refusing to negotiate

Hirajoshi — Open Position (frets 0–5)

Five notes, huge gaps — the gaps are the instrument · money move C→B marked in rust

03The Drone — Law 3, Operationalised

Every specimen gets practised over this before it goes anywhere near a chord. Root + 5th under the six scales that keep their B; root only under Persian and Insen, whose whole point is arguing with the 5th.

Method for every specimen, in order: 1) play it slowly ascending/descending over the drone until the ear stops flinching · 2) find the money note and lean on it · 3) improvise phrases that all end on E or B via half-step. That's Laws 3, then 1, then 2 — the full naturalisation process for any alien scale, including ones not in this cabinet.

04Specimen Handling — One Lick Each

Six licks for the six headline specimens. Each is built around the money note and lands per Law 2 — steal the landing mechanism even if you bin the lick.

SPECIMEN 1 · Double Harmonic · the pincer slink

Hijaz Snake

E F G♯ A B C D♯ · money: the F/D♯ pincers

The signature move of the entire double-harmonic world: circle the root with the ♭2 above approach and the natural-7 below, so E gets squeezed from both sides. Slow, rubato, ornamental — this scale hates being sprinted through.

(rubato · let the half-steps drag)

G|-----------1--2--1--------------------|
D|--2--3--2----------—2--1--2-----------|
     E F E G♯ A G♯ E D♯ E ← squeezed home from both sides
TARGET · the D♯→E and F→E resolutions land with intent, not accident
SPECIMEN 2 · Tritone Scale · the negotiation

Petrushka Stabs

E F G♯ B♭ B D · money: the F/B♭ pair

Don't run this scale — alternate its two triads. E major and B♭ major, stabbed in rigid straight 8ths (the Session 03 slab logic, relocated a tritone). Then release into a single-line run and the scale suddenly speaks as one thing.

     E E B♭ B♭ E E B♭ B♭ release run

TARGET · triad alternation from memory at 84 bpm, run lands B on a downbeat
SPECIMEN 3 · Prometheus · the mystic chord

Scriabin's Fourth Stack

E F♯ G♯ A♯ C♯ D · money: A♯

The scale IS a chord: stack it in fourths and you get Scriabin's mystic chord on E. Arpeggiate the shape into the BigSky, let it hang, then melodise with the leftover notes. No 5th anywhere — that absence is the shimmer.

arpeggiate slow, let ring then float on top

     E A♯ D G♯ C♯ C♯ A♯ G♯ F♯ — no B anywhere, ever
TARGET · mystic chord memorised as a grip · 2 minutes of float over the drone without touching a B
SPECIMEN 4 · Hungarian Minor · one note from home

The ♯4 Defection

E F♯ G A♯ B C D♯ · money: A♯

This is E harmonic minor with the A promoted to A♯ — one accidental away from your three-cell system. Run a familiar harmonic-minor cell, then replay it with the A♯ swap and hear the whole line change passports. The A♯→B resolution is the lick.

as you know it (harm. minor) the defection (A → A♯)

TARGET · any three cells from your system converted to ♯4 on demand, by ear
SPECIMEN 5 · Hirajoshi · radical subtraction

Koto Descent

E F♯ G B C · money: C→B

Five notes and the discipline to add nothing. Descend, let everything ring, pluck near the bridge for the koto attack, and give the C→B sigh the space it's owed. Through the wet Mesa with a long tail this is a complete piece of music in six notes.

(let ring · pluck near bridge · no vibrato until the last note)
e|--0-----------------------------|
B|-----1--0-----------------------|
G|-----------0--------------------|
D|--------------4--2--------------|
     E C B G F♯ E — the C→B is the entire emotional payload
TARGET · 3 minutes of improv adding NO notes outside the five · silence counts as vocabulary
SPECIMEN 6 · Enigmatic · the fever dream

Verdi's Ladder

E F G♯ A♯ C D D♯ · money: F, then the chromatic top

Written by Verdi as a deliberately "impossible" scale; it turns out to be a perfectly good story arc: the ♭2 lurch, the whole-tone plateau where gravity switches off, then the D–D♯–E chromatic parachute home. Play it on one string so the hand feels the geography the ear is hearing.

lurch ── plateau (whole tones) ── parachute
E|--0--1----4----6----8----10--11--12--|
     E F G♯ A♯ C D D♯ E
(then descend and feel the parachute become a launch ramp)
TARGET · ascend/descend from memory · then one phrase per zone: lurch-only, plateau-only, parachute-only

05The Weekly Loop

Satellite protocol, same as the Strange Apparatus: two days a week alongside your main session. The cabinet's cardinal rule is monogamy — one specimen per week, courted properly, not eight scales speed-dated into mush.

MIN 00–05

Naturalisation

This week's specimen over the drone: slow ascent/descent until the flinch stops, then money-note leaning. Laws 3 and 1.

MIN 05–10

The Lick

The specimen's handling lick from Section 04, then two variants of your own that keep its landing mechanism. Law 2 in practice.

MIN 10–15

Map Work

Move the specimen out of its diagrammed position: same scale, one new area of the neck per session, found by interval logic not memorisation.

MIN 15–20

The Bridge

Alternate 2 bars of the specimen with 2 bars of plain E minor pentatonic over the drone. The seam between alien and home is where taste gets built.

MIN 20–25

The Specimen Take — Recorded

Five minutes, this week's scale plus pentatonic escapes only. Recorded, filed, one per week — by week eight you'll own a cabinet, not a list.

SUNDAY

The Audit

Listen back. One question: could a listener hum the root after your weirdest phrase? Yes = the scale worked. No = more Law 2 next week, same specimen.

Cabinet Rules — The Probably Fine Protocol, Specimen Amendment

Monogamy. One scale per week for eight weeks. Suggested order: Hungarian Minor first (one note from home), then Double Harmonic, Hirajoshi, Tritone, Insen, Prometheus, Persian, Enigmatic last — roughly the gradient from familiar to feral.

The money note earns its keep. If a take doesn't feature the specimen's money note prominently, the specimen wasn't played — a scale avoided into blandness is worse than not practising it.

Graduation is migration. Same metric as ever: a specimen is yours the first time it appears uninvited in a Session 01 or 02 take and nobody in the room files a complaint.
