Three shapes cover every mode of major and melodic minor — 14 scales. Harmonic minor adds two more. That's the whole fretboard.
The count. Play any 7-note scale three notes per string and each string is one spacing cell — the two gaps between
three consecutive notes. The major scale and the melodic minor scale, across all fourteen of their modes,
only ever use three: T-T, T-S, S-T. A mode is just the same cell-chain started at a
different point. Only harmonic minor breaks it — its augmented second forces two new cells, S-A and
A-S. Learn three shapes, add two, done.
01The cell library
Five shapes total. The first three are all you need for major and melodic minor. Tap to hear. Greyed cells aren't used by the current scale below.
02Explore any mode
Pick a scale family, a mode, and a root. The neck rebuilds three-notes-per-string, low-E on top, coloured by cell, roots ringed. Tap notes to hear; run the scale to play it.

03The modes, side by side
Every mode with its formula and its cell-chain (strings 6→1). Notice the major and melodic-minor blocks never leave the first three colours.

BPM
1
Own the three base cells. On the A string: T–T (5·7·9), T–S (5·7·8), S–T (5·6·8), up and down. These unlock all 14 major + melodic-minor modes.
Chain a major mode. Set the explorer to Major / Ionian, run it low→high naming cells: T-T, T-T, S-T, S-T, T-S, T-S. Then switch to Dorian — same shapes, chain starts one cell over.
4
Cross to melodic minor. Same three cells, scrambled order. Run Melodic Minor, then Lydian Dominant (the fusion 7♯11 sound) and Altered. Your fingers already know the shapes — only the sequence is new.
5
Add the aug-2 cells. Switch to Harmonic minor. Meet S–A (1·2·4 with a fret gap) and A–S. Phrygian Dominant is the one to camp on — that's the Spanish/flamenco colour.
6
Transpose & leap. Slide any mode to a new root; the shape doesn't change. Then — the Halvorson bridge — stop running the cells in order and start leaping between them: the wide-interval vocabulary is just the three-cell map, played out of sequence.
Why this matters for improv. You're not learning 21 scales. You're learning three shapes (five with harmonic minor)
and where the chain starts. Every mode of major and melodic minor is a rotation of the same three-cell loop — which is why,
once it's automatic, you can think in sound and let the hand find the notes.
All fingerings, modes and cell-chains generated and verified programmatically · 3nps · standard tuning · low-E on top · cells classified by pitch-gap (tuning-independent).
